Teaser for Arriani

I awoke to the sound of footsteps in the woods.  I grabbed one of my knives and held it close. I assumed Isabella and Tamlen heard it too because they were both grabbing for their weapons too. I looked and saw a figure of what looked like an elven man in the distance, but I wasn’t sure because almost as soon as I saw it he disappeared back into the bushes. I got up and snuck towards the figure. Soon after I left I heard fighting back at camp so I turned to go back but someone grabbed me and put a knife to my throat. I put my foot behind his ankle and pushed back really hard and we both fell backwards causing him to let go and his knife went flying and stuck into the dirt.

We both got up and brushed ourselves off. I looked up at him and saw that he was elven, about my age. He had silver-blond hair and really light blue-grey eyes. He had a really kind but strong face and he seemed really muscular. He looked foreign though, like he was from Anzera, He was good looking though none the less. He came running towards me but I tripped him and he fell to the ground again. I got on top of him and dug my knee into his sternum and held my knife to his throat. He tried to get up but I pushed down both with my knee and my knife. He grunted and gave up.

“What are you doing here and how did you find us?” I asked.

“I was trying to kill you and your friends.” He answered quickly with a definite Anzeran accent that could melt any woman in their shoes. “As for finding you my dear I am an assassin I could find you if you were over the edge of the world.”

“Why are you trying to kill us?” I asked sternly.

“I was hired to.” He answered.

“Who sent you?” I demanded.

“It was the king, Riordian, although he didn’t tell me how pretty you are when he hired me.” He answered with a coy smile.

“Do you think it’s a smart idea to hit on me when you’re at the sharp end of my knife?” I asked pushing the knife against his throat harder.

“And feisty too, I think this is the best job I’ve been on yet.” He said.

“Why are you telling me all of this so easily, are you not loyal to your employers?” I asked, ignoring the last thing he said.

“The king paid me for a murder, not for silence.” He answered.

“Did he say anything about why he sent you here?” I asked.

“Actually all he told me was you were a threat to the throne, so I assumed that you were someone that was trying to overrule him or kill him even. Anything else you want to know?” He asked.

“No, just go before I change my mind.” I answered getting up.

“Wait, you’re just going to let me go? You’re not going to kill me or take me hostage?” He questioned, coming up to his elbows. “Not even take advantage of me?”

“Do you want me to change my mind?” I asked, almost sarcastically.

“No, well maybe the taking advantage part, but you can let me come with you.” He answered with another coy smile.

“You tried to kill me!” I exclaimed, turning around to look at him so he could see how serious I was.

“Yes, but I didn’t.” He replied, smiling at me with the most stunning smile I had ever seen.

“Because I kicked your ass.” I answered, giggling a little as I was finishing my sentence.

“I could have won that if I wanted too, I was distracted by your beauty. Plus do you really want me chasing after you night after night; wouldn’t you want me where you didn’t have to worry about me trying to kill you again?” He replied, thinking he was being smart.

“Why do you even want to come with, it’s nothing an assassin would want to do?” I asked.

“Well, when you’re an assassin if you fail on a job, you die on the job if not they kill you when you get back. Its death either way, but maybe if I go with you Cojin and the other assassins might believe that I’m dead and I won’t have to worry about it anymore, and being an assassin is getting boring.”   He answered, looking more serious now than he had the entire time we were talking. “I’d rather take my chances of possibly living, than dying either way.”

“Why should I care if you live or die?” I asked.

“Because if not I will not go back until you are dead.” He answered thinking he was being clever.

“Do you really think it’s a good idea to threaten me, whatever your name is? I could just kill you now.”

“If you were going to kill me you would have by now, and my name is Zeveran,” he answered “and what is yours or should I just call you beautiful?”

“It’s Arriani, and fine whatever but you’ll be treated just like a hostage” I answered.

“Which means?” He asked.

“You’re getting tied up.” I answered, helping him to his feet.

We walked back to camp. Isabella and Tamlen weren’t back at camp yet. I walked over to one of the backpacks and grabbed a long piece of rope out. I tied Zeverans hands together and then tied him to a tree, only giving him enough room to lie down. Tamlen and Isabella came back when I finished tying him to the tree.

“I thought we agreed no hostages.” Tamlen said.

“It’s a long story.” I answered.

“Arriani,” He said with anger in his voice.

“He wanted to come with us.” I answered.

“So why didn’t you kill him?” He asked.

“Because I am sick of having to kill everyone that comes our way.” I answered.

“You brought the assassin because he…” He started but stopped as soon as he saw the look I was giving him. “If looks could kill…” He muttered walking away from me and Isabella.

“I’ll go talk to him.” Isabella said chasing after him.

Isabella knew that I wouldn’t do anything that I thought would hurt what we were doing, but Tamlen questioned a lot of what I did. Even though they were both human they still treated me like an equal and Isabella understood me better than a lot of people even before we found out we were cousins.

“Goodnight” Zeveran said as I lied down.

“Goodnight” I returned, closing my eyes to go back to sleep.

  2. I bought and read this book quite recently and I’ve got to say I enjoyed every minute of it. It’s action packed and really makes you feel what the characters are feeling. It made me want to keep reading more and this was honestly the second book in my life that I couldn’t put down. I really enjoyed the sarcasm that Arriani had and she’s a character that people can relate to.

I suggest buying this book because it’s an amazing story that you’ll want to read more then once.
