Lyali (First Teaser)

LYALI

Dustin and I lied in the grass, staring up at the sky. We were surrounded by three hundred foot tall mountains with nothing that could sneak up on us. The sound of the spring made it that much more relaxing. Dustin and I came here all the time to blow off steam and relax.  The only other people that knew about this place were my parents and Dustin’s parents.

Dustin was my cousin and on top of that he was my best friend. He was almost six months younger than me but he was just like me but a male version. We always agreed about everything and he was so protective over me even though he knew I could handle myself.

Today was my Seventeenth birthday and my parents were throwing a huge party like they always do when we have a birthday. Dustin was supposed to meet the girl he is going to marry today also, so we were here just to relax before the party started.

“Lyali…” Dustin started, breaking my train of thought. “What do you think she’s going to be like?”

“Sera Leah?” I asked.

“No, the other girl my parents are making me marry when I turn seventeen.” He answered sarcastically. “Yes, Sera Leah.”

“I don’t know, she will probably be just another typical girl.” I answered. “But why did they have to arrange for you to meet her on my birthday?”

“I know, why can’t we just hang out all day instead of them having a huge party too, why does the whole kingdom have to be there?” Dustin replied.

“Because you’re the prince and it’s at your castle, so of course everyone’s going to be there.” I answered.

“Yes but it sucks.”  He said sitting up. “What’s going on with Andrew? I haven’t seen him around as much as I usually do, why is that?”

“I don’t know, he seems distant, almost like he’s hiding something.” I answered.

“What? You really think he’s hiding something?” He replied.

“I don’t know, he acts like it though.” I answered sitting up also.

“Is he supposed to be there tonight?” Dustin asked.

“He’s supposed to.” I answered. “It’s getting late, we got to go get ready.”

Dustin stood up and helped me up. We ran through the tunnel like entrance as we realized that the sun was starting to set. We jumped on our horses and rode back to the castle as quick as possible.  We put the horses back in the stables and we ran to the tree by Dustin’s bedroom window. I flung myself through the tree branches until we got up to the second story window, I jumped up and grabbed onto the windowpane and pulled myself in right as soon as I heard my mom hollering for me.

“What mom?” I asked as I left Dustin’s room, closing the door behind me.

“You’re not dressed yet.” She stated as she walked up to me. “Lyali the party started fifteen minutes ago.”

“Arriani, calm down she’s just a kid, don’t you remember what it was like getting you ready for anything.” My dad said walking up behind my mother and wrapping his arms around her waist.

“You have twenty minutes.” My mother said kissing my father and walking away.

I ran to the room right next to Dustin’s which was my room whenever I stayed in the castle. I put on the purple and black dress my mom bought for me last week. It was purple on the top until it got down to my waist and black from there down. It was strapless and had a slit in it that went up to my thigh.  I put a pair of shorts on underneath it and put my makeup on. I walked out the door after I got my shoes on and knocked on Dustin’s door.

“Wow cousin you look amazing, Andrew’s one lucky guy.” He said as he came out of the door.

“Thank you Dustin, you look quite good yourself.” I answered as he put his arm out to escort me to the main room.

We walked down the stairs to the main room with my arm in his, like always everyone was staring at us. As soon as we got down the stairs Dustin and I got separated which was no surprise. I started looking for Andrew but I couldn’t find him. I walked into the hallway though and I saw a guy that looked like him kissing a human girl. I didn’t think it was him until they pulled away from each other.

“Andrew,” I said more angry than heartbroken.

“Lyali!” he said surprised.

“Asshole,” I said slapping him across the face and walking away.

I knew it was going to happen eventually, humans always cheat on elven. The only humans that treat us like equals are our cousins, and they are royalty. I walked out onto the balcony and unfortunately I started crying. I have been expecting it to happen since he started acting strange so I don’t even know why I was crying, but the tears wouldn’t stop falling.

“Why is such a pretty lady out here all by herself?” I heard come from right behind me in in a deep but kind voice.

“Just enjoying the view.” I answered trying to sound like I wasn’t crying, not turning around to see who it was.

“Doesn’t sound like it.” He said coming over and leaning on the railing right beside me.

I turned my head away from him and tried to wipe the tears off. “I’m fine.” I said.

“That’s a lie.” He said. “Come dance with me it will make you feel better.”

“I don’t even know you .” I answered, turning to look at him.

He was gorgeous. He was elven just like me. He had really dark hair and he was almost a foot taller than me. His eyes looked almost like emeralds and he had a very attractive, welcoming smile. He seemed about the same age as me too.

“My name is Dante.” He answered, putting his hand out for me to take it.

I don’t know why, but I took his hand and we started dancing right there on the balcony. He had very strong hands and his eyes shimmered in the light of the full moon. He stared into my eyes and it almost seemed like I was in a trance, it was hypnotic.

“I… better… go.” I said  as I realized that Dustin was looking for me.

“Wait.” He said as I pulled away from him. “When can I see you again?”

“Tomorrow night, come to the tree in the front yard.” I said staring into his eyes again.

“When?” He asked, holding onto both of my hands.

“After sunset.” I answered, still half in a trance.

“I never got your name.” He stated, smiling.

“It’s Lyali,” I said, a little embarrassed that I hadn’t already told him.

“Lyali!” I heard Dustin hollering.
